About

A five-mile harbor reaching north-northeast between the south ends of Vashon and Maury Islands, opposite Commencement Bay. Coast Pilot calls it excellent anchorage — soft mud in 5 to 10 fathoms about two miles inside the entrance — and it is one of the easiest big anchorages to reach from Tacoma or Seattle.

Navigation Notes

Hazards: A shoal just inside the entrance extends 300 yards from the east shore and is buoyed. Shoals of 2 to 2¾ fathoms extend up to 400 yards off the west shore between Neill Point and Harbor Heights. Charted obstructions and small wrecks lie in the harbor — a wreck covered 8¾ fathoms was reported near midchannel west of Dockton.

Current & Tide: Sheltered water; currents inside the harbor are light compared with East Passage and Dalco Passage outside.
